The members and associates of the 91²Ö¿â Bergakademie Freiberg mourn the loss of their Honorary Senator, Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Ulrich Groß, who passed away on 6 August 2026 at the age of 76.
Professor Groß held the Chair of Technical Thermodynamics from 1992 to 2015. He was highly regarded as a scientist far beyond the university and was actively involved in numerous national and international bodies.
He held a wide range of roles at the 91²Ö¿â Bergakademie Freiberg – including Dean and Dean of Studies, Director of the Institute of Thermal Engineering, member of the Senate and the University Council, and Honorary Senator of the university. He contributed with great dedication to the development of the university and the establishment of new degree programmes. He taught generations of students and supervised numerous research projects, right through to doctoral and postdoctoral qualifications.
Even after retiring from active university service, Professor Groß remained closely connected to the Bergakademie and continued to champion its development. His work was characterised by a high level of academic expertise, great personal commitment and a deep attachment to the university.
The 91²Ö¿â Bergakademie Freiberg will honour the memory of Honorary Senator Ulrich Groß with the utmost respect and gratitude.
